Overview

The experienced team of board-certified urologists, urologic surgeons and urological oncologists at Greenwich Hospital provide a broad range of care for conditions of the urinary tract and kidneys in men and women. Working with a multidisciplinary team of specialists, they provide comprehensive care and treatment plans customized to the needs of each patient.

A Multidisciplinary Approach

Our renowned urologists have expertise in a broad range of subspecialties including oncology, and neuro-urology, as well as female urology, the management of kidney stone disease and minimally invasive surgery. As leading researchers at Yale School of Medicine, specialists provide patients access to the latest advancements in urologic care and treatment.

Areas of Expertise

The clinical expertise of the team provides comprehensive treatment of complex urological problems, including:

  • Urologic oncology, covering cancer of the bladder, prostate, testis, kidney and penis
  • Prostate disorders such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), an enlargement of the prostate that often causes frequent urination and a feeling of “not emptying” completely
  • Kidney stone prevention and treatment
  • Neuro and female urology, providing care for voiding dysfunction, incontinence, female urologic problems and urinary tract difficulties related to neurologic diseases
  • Pediatric urology, covering congenital anomalies and the management of urologic neoplasms

How We Diagnose Urologic Conditions

Greenwich Hospital offers a full array of diagnostic services to identify urological problems, including:

  • Noninvasive ultrasound. A painless diagnostic technique that uses sound waves to produce images of internal organs without harm or exposure to radiation.
  • Cystoscopy. A procedure that allows the urologist to view the inside of the bladder and urethra by inserting a thin, lit tube through the urethra and into the bladder.
  • Specialized X-ray. A contrast agent is used to enhance vision during X-ray procedures.
  • Biopsy. Removal of a small amount of tissue for testing. A specially designed needle is often used to biopsy the prostate or kidney. The needle is guided with ultrasound or special X-rays, such as a CT scan. The bladder or urethra can be biopsied with endoscopes designed to pass through urine passageways. Revolutionary medical technologies like Artemis, used at Greenwich Hospital, and ExactVu™, used in our community offices, use a combination of MRI imaging with ultrasounds to help our urologic surgeons overlap images for a more precise, accurate prostate cancer biopsy.
  • Blood test. A blood test will be conducted if there are concerns with your prostate or it needs to be evaluated further.

How We Treat Urologic Conditions

Urological conditions can be treated through various methods, such as minimally invasive surgery, antibiotics for infections, lifestyle modifications and pelvic floor exercises. A urologist will determine the most suitable treatment based on the diagnosis and symptom severity.

Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP)

This minimally invasive procedure for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), known as an enlarged prostate, uses high-powered lasers to remove excess tissue from an enlarged prostate, improving a patient’s ability to urinate. Most patients go home on the same day.

Kidney stones

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), a minimally invasive procedure that breaks up kidney stones and other stones using shock waves; ureteroscopy laser lithotripsy (UROL), also a minimally invasive procedure used to break kidney stones by directly applying a laser beam to the stone; nutrition counseling; and medical management.

Surgery

Our renowned physicians are specially trained in today’s most advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic-assisted procedures. They treat common to complex conditions including prostate, bladder and testicular cancer through minimally invasive surgery using state-of-the-art robotic surgical systems, which offer several advantages, including:

  • Decreased need for pain medication following surgery
  • Smaller incisions resulting in less scarring and discomfort
  • Reduced recovery time, often from weeks to days, allowing patients to return to normal activities sooner
  • Lower risk of infection and surgical complications
