Although most pediatric visits to Greenwich Hospital are for ambulatory, or same-day, procedures, we offer a full range of surgical procedures for children, from infancy through their teenage years. Patients are cared for by staff specially trained in treating children. Children who remain in the hospital after surgery stay in the Pediatric Unit.
The pediatric surgery services team understands and respects the importance of clear and thorough communication with families. Emphasis is placed on educating children and parents so that they understand what to expect and are as comfortable and well prepared as possible for surgery.
Families are encouraged to take a Preoperative Pediatric Tour, prior to admission. Tours are open to all children, their parents and siblings. Getting to know the hospital staff, procedures and environment before the day of surgery can ease the fears of children and their families. To arrange a tour, call the Greenwich Hospital Volunteer Department at 203-863-3222.
Many of the conditions or illnesses that affect children can be treated on an outpatient basis. These one-day procedures are typically performed at Greenwich Hospital’s Ambulatory Surgery Center on the second floor. Before-and-after care takes place in the Pediatric Unit, also on the second floor.
Outpatient procedures for children include ear tube placement, tonsillectomy, certain eye procedures and many more. Families often find one-day procedures less stressful for their child, because recuperation can occur in the familiar surroundings of home.
